State Inspection Process

The state inspection process consists of three main components:

  1. Checking the Car’s Physical Status: Inspecting the overall condition of the vehicle to ensure it meets safety standards.
  2. Road Test: Conducting a road test to evaluate the vehicle’s performance and safety on the road.
  3. Emission Check: Ensuring the vehicle complies with emission standards set by the state.

Proof of Insurance:

  • Valid proof of insurance is required as part of the state inspection process.

One Sticker, Zero Hassle

During a state inspection, various safety items are checked, including but not limited to:

  • Horn
  • Windshield Wipers
  • Mirrors
  • Seat Belts
  • Brake System
  • Tires
  • Exhaust System & Exhaust Emission System
  • Tail Lamps, Stop Lamps, License Plate Lamp, Turn Signal Lamps, and Head Lamps
  • Rear Red Reflectors
  • Window Tint
  • Steering
  • Beam Indicator
  • Gas Caps

Two Steps, One Sticker

As a result of House Bill 2305 passed during the 83rd legislative session (2013), the State of Texas no longer issues inspection stickers. Instead, Texas has transitioned to a “Two Steps, One Sticker” vehicle inspection and registration program. Your registration sticker serves as combined proof of registration and inspection.

  • Starting from March 1, 2016, you have 90 days to complete the Two Steps.
  • To renew your registration on time, your vehicle must pass inspection no earlier than 90 days before your registration expires.

What Happens If Your Car Fails Safety Inspection?

If your car fails the safety inspection, your Kwik Kar Inspector will inform you of the necessary remedies to pass the inspection. Retesting is free within fifteen days. Keeping your car well-maintained and making necessary repairs is the best way to pass the inspection.

However, a failed inspection may indicate a more significant underlying issue. In such cases, with your prior approval, our technicians can diagnose the problem quickly and suggest a course of action to address and rectify the issue.
